Email Marketing and Your Small Business

Have you decided it is time to take advantage of the Internet and all it has to offer to your small business? If so, then you will certainly want to focus on email marketing so that you can let all of your customers know about your products and services and keep them up to date with new things going on in your business. You will need to add an opt in list to your website so that customers can subscribe to your newsletter and to receive discounts and periodic information. This way, you know you are only sending marketing emails to those who are truly interested in your products and in many cases past customers.

It is considerably easier to sell to a previous customer than it is to land a new customer so make sure you take advantage of all email marketing has to offer your small business. Remember, too, that when you use email marketing you will want to send out emails often enough to keep customers aware of what’s going on with new products, services, discounts, clearance, and the like, but not so often that it becomes annoying or the emails begin to get deleted without being read. The following tips will help you with email marketing and your small business.

Tip #1 Great Copy
You need to make sure the marketing email has excellent copy so that when you send it out the information just pops out at them. This includes headlines, bold important information with a large font and simply focus on making the email short, sweet, and to the point. Nobody wants to read a long page of information on the company or anything. What they want to know is about discounts, clearance items, or new products.

Tip #2 Personalize Copy
Makes sure you always personalize copy with email marketing. You could use the name of the person and even make a comment about the previous product or service they purchased. This will make them feel appreciated and also that you are paying attention to them. That will reel them in to check out what you are recommending for them.

Tip #3 Follow Up
Don’t spam people, but don’t let a purchase go unnoticed. Send a “thank you” email and include a coupon for a future purchase with it. For example, once a purchase is made send a “thank you” email within 24 hours thanking the customer for the purchase and offering assistance if any is needed. Then, include a coupon for 20% off their next order if made within the next 30 days. You could even offer 50% off certain items if purchased within 7 days. It’s up to you how you offer discounts, but if you are aggressive and offer what your customers perceive to be a good deal then you will make more sales!

Improve Your Small Business Sales

It is time to improve your small business sales and the best way to do that is to come up with some simple ways to make your business stronger. Fortunately, there are many different ways for you to improve your small business sales and one of those is email marketing. This is certainly something you will not want to overlook as it can make a huge impact in your bottom line without requiring much time or money.

Email marketing is a method that you can begin using that will pay for itself time and time again. For example, with email marketing you will be able to collect email addresses of your customers who are willing to receive emails and advertisements from you. This is important that you use opt in email addresses because otherwise you could get yourself into trouble. Simply make sure that you make it easy to subscribe to your website, newsletter, or other information so that your contact list grows and grows.

One thing you can do to increase your bottom line is raise prices. You may think that by doing that you would eliminate many of your current clients; however that is not the case. Most of the time customers consider prices too high because they don’t understand what they are receiving for the price. What is important is that you must present your prices in a way that they will be accepted for the value they provide.

Another thing you can do to benefit your small business marketing efforts is to close more sales. Whatever methods you are using to convert interest into sales needs to be doubled or tripled to make you more money. If you are using a website and email marketing then you need to fine tune the points here, if you are using direct marketing then you also will want to focus on the finer points of this. It is important to evaluate where your small business is sales lie, how many sales you convert, and what you can do to improve your business sales. Many times, simply writing a script for phone conversations and compelling web copy is enough to make your business turnaround.

These are just a few tips to help improve your small business sales. Remember, all businesses are different so all marketing methods will not be helpful. You need to learn what marketing methods work best for your business and then vary them so that you aren’t bombarding your customers with the same information every time and that you are always presenting your business and/or service in a new and interesting light.

Email Marketing and Your Small Business

Your small business needs email marketing to survive and save money on advertising. In general, email marketing should work quickly and easily. Basically, as long as you have a contact list that has been well maintained all you need to do is send out an email to let your customers know what you are selling, a new promotion, or a new product or service. However, there is something you should realize what could happen even if you have a great contact list and what you imagein are great new products and services.

If you notice your sales are slowing down, but can’t find a good reason for them to be doing so, then you should check your email broadcast service. Many times, when an email broadcast service begins taking on more and more clients that spam their contact lists, rather than use them responsibly to contact people with permission, many Internet Service Providers will begin to block the emails from that particular broadcast service. Even if you use a broadcast service to send out email marketing mails and follow the rules as you should and ensure you only email those who request information from you it is still quite possible that your emails will be blocked by ISPs. This can kill your sales. So, the only option in this case is to change broadcast services. This is certainly a pain because it involves a lot of work and effort. Not to mention you have to ask your subscribers to change with you. Not everyone will but your loyal customers probably will. The most important thing is that your emails will actually make it to your customers’ inboxes. This is what is most important and what you should focus on. The thing that you will want to check on is whether or not your emails are going through or not. In many cases, they aren’t, and if you had good sales that have suddenly plummeted it may be because your emails aren’t going through. So always check on this.

If you are relying on email broadcasts to deliver your marketing emails to your customers you may not be getting what you bargained for. As a result, you will certainly want to double check and see how your emails are getting to your intended recipients.

In order to ensure your emails get through you will need to use an email broadcast service that is reliable and that does not take on clients who are spammers. This is what is most important so be sure to keep a good check on your emails and how well they are being received.

Small Business Marketing Tips

When it comes to small business marketing there are several things that must be kept in mind. For example, small businesses rarely have big budgets for advertising. As a result, they need to find methods to advertise their product or service without spending a lot of money. The following small business marketing tips will help your business grow and make more money.

Multiple Marketing Tactics
The first thing you will want to do is come up with several marketing ideas that will help your business. Then, figure out a plan to rotate these tactics so that you get the most bang for your buck. One marketing effort may work great the first time and not the second time or else it works only occasionally. Because of this it is important for small businesses to have a marketing plan and alternate various types of marketing tactics for the best results.

Buddy Marketing
Another option is to use buddy marketing. This is a great way to reach new customers without much cost. The way buddy marketing works is that when you send out a brochure of your company you include a business card or small leaflet for another business to advertise for them based on an agreement that they will do the same for you. The business should be complementary to yours, but not in competition.

Second Offers
As soon as a customer makes a purchase send them a letter thanking them for their purchase and that because of this purchase they may be able to buy return and buy an additional item for a discount of 20% or something of that nature. Make sure you include an expiration date, too, so there is a sense of urgency.

Market to Past Customers
Remember that marketing to your past customers is better than marketing to new ones. That is not to say that you don’t want to try and get new customers just that old customers are easier to sell to. As a result, concentrate and marketing to your past customers whether this be through email marketing, newsletters, or coupons in the mail. Regardless of the way you market to past customers you will benefit by making more sales.

These are just a few tips to help small businesses market their services and business. It is really important to keep in mind there are unlimited ways to market your business without spending a lot of money or even time. It’s just important to be aware of what the options are and how to make them work for you.

How to Buy an Autoresponder

There are many different types of autoresponders and many different needs for autoresponders. As a result, you need to know what type of software you need before you buy anything. Some people will find that all they need is to send a message to their customers or contacts letting them know they are out of the office. If this is all you need, then in most cases you will find the autoresponder that is included with your web hosting service will be sufficient.

If your needs are more complex then you will need to use a commercial autoresponder system. This is important because you may need the autoresponder to send various emails over the course of a period of days. Or, perhaps you will want to schedule the emails to be sent on certain days every week. In this case you will need a more sophisticated autoresponder system. The best way to do this is with a commercial system that is designed to handle more sophisticated requests.

Compare Features
The first thing you want to do is to compare features between the autoresponder programs you are interested in. The reason you will want to do this is to find the program that works best for you. Some programs may be very expensive but not really provide you with many features. Then, there are others that are truly packed with features and services that are more affordable. This is why it makes sense to compare features. You need to pinpoint the features that are most important to you and the autoresponders that offer those features. Then, see how they stack up against one another and read reviews to see what others say about the software. There is no reason to buy a program if nobody seems to like it. Do your research and you will find the right autoresponder for you.

Compare Prices
You will also want to compare prices. Even if you have decided on the exact autoresponder you are interested in purchasing you should still search the web to find the best price. All too often you will buy the first autoresponder you find that looks good only to find the same one offered at a substantial discount later on. Take your time and complete your research so that you don’t have any problems or spend too much money.

These are just a few tips to help you find and buy the best autoresponder at the best price. Remember, too, that quality is more important than price. You don’t want to waste your time and money buying a cheap autoresponder that may not provide you with the service you are anticipating. Don’t stress spending a little more money because by doing so you will end up with a better product and it will save you money and time in the long run.

Reduce Your Workload with Autoresponders

Autoresponders are quite common with those who use email and especially those who have their own website. Basically, when you receive an immediate pre-written response to an email you send someone it is from an autoresponder. People frequently use them so that people who email them will immediately know where they are or when they will return. This is a wonderful way to let people know you are on vacation and what day you will return. It’s similar to leaving an away voicemail so those contacting you will have an idea of when to expect a reply from you. In the virtual world, it is common courtesy. The following suggestions are a few things that will help you with autoresponders.

Tip #1 Technical Support
If you offer technical support to your customers many times they will send you an email from your website and your autoresponder will immediately send a reply letting them know they will be contacted soon to resolve the issue. This is an important method to use to let your customers know that you have received their request and are working on it. Customers need to be reassured and this is a great method to do that.

Tip #2 Price Lists
Another great way to use autoresponders is to allow them to send price lists to prospective customers. Many times customers will be interested in prices and will contact you for this information. If you had to reply to every one of them then you would spend a lot of time and not make a sale on every single contact. As a result, it is best to allow the autoresponder to do all of the heavy work and then only deal in person with those who have made the decision to make a purchase from you.

Tip #3 FAQ
Frequently, potential customers are also interested in some basic information about your company, products, or services. The easiest way to provide all of this information and answer the majority of customers’ questions without having to spend your entire day behind a desk responding to emails is to allow the autoresponder to do all of the work.

Tip #4 Course Modules
Autoresponders are a great way to email course modules to subscribers. All that is necessary is to program the autoresponder to send various emails to certain recipients on a particular date. Then, everything will be handled and you can sit back and relax or else do something else more worthwhile.

These are just some of the methods webmasters may find to be helpful in their business. Autoresponders are wonders and can truly help your business in ways that you never imagined. Buy an autoresponder because the investment will pay you back in no time in the amount of work it will save you.

Additional Benefits of Autoresponders

Many people look into autoresponders to help them with a particular aspect of their business, however when they begin doing the research they find there are many more benefits they were unaware of that can help them just as much if not more than the original reason. It’s surprising, but making your business more automated in every aspect possible will help you use your time more efficiently and also make more money. The following are a few of the additional benefits of autoresponders that you might not have been aware of.

Build a Relationship
You may have thought of using autoresponders as a way to simply contact customers once and awhile. However, you can actually use them to build a relationship with your customers and potential customers. For example, you could choose to offer everyone on your contact list a special bonus or a free eBook. Something that is not advertised on your website and that only listserv members will know about. This will help you create and strengthen a relationship with your customers and increase your sales.

Lower Return of Products
There truly is nothing worse than making a sale only to have the product returned to you. Your goal is to make sales, primarily, and secondly, reduce the number of returns. The autoresponder can help you with this. Simply send out a follow up email to every individual that makes a purchase and inform them of an added bonus they will be given for purchasing from you. When this is unadvertised and the individual receives it after a purchase they truly feel welcome and appreciated. This means the number of returns will likely drop. This saves time, money, and a lot of hassle.

Receiving Feedback
There is nothing more important to your business than consumer feedback. If you listen to your customers then you can quickly correct any problems you have in your system or with your product and make your system better and more profitable. Use the autoresponder to help you receive testimonials from your customers. Send out an email a few days after they have received and likely used the product. When the customer has a fresh opinion of the product they are more likely to leave a testimonial for you. Consider offering them a small discount, a free eBook, or something of that nature to make them want to provide the feedback on the product.

Improvement
Always consider using an autoresponder message at this stage of the game to include a survey that will ask the customer to provide feedback on the product, service, communication, and tips on how to make it better. You will receive important information on your way of doing business and on your product that will help you in the long run.

Tips for Getting the Most out of Autoresponders

Autoresponders have so many features it is practically impossible to take advantage of all of them at once. Remember, though, the autoresponder can’t help you do things that you have not programmed it to do. That means that you will have to take the time and make the effort to set up all the features that you are interested in taking advantage of. Doing so will benefit you and your business in the long run. There are many tasks you don’t have to handle on your own with the autoresponder, but if you are unaware of what they are you won’t take advantage of them. Read the following steps to learn a little more about this system and how to make it work for you.

Permission
The first step is the most important step and that is receiving permission to contact an individual. How do you receive this permission? By getting them to provide you with their email address! You must create a sense of interest so that people will want to hand over their email address so they can learn more about what you are selling. Remember, too, to add a hook so that people will continue to subscribe to your business.

Gaining Subscribers
The next step is gaining subscribers. You already have the email address so you can contact them, but don’t go and ask them to sign up for your newsletter just yet. Instead, provide them with something interesting and worthwhile. Get them thinking about your product or service and then ask them in a second email a day or two later to sign up for the newsletter. This is a better way to approach people because it is not as abrupt and it allows you to establish a relationship. Going slow will result in more subscribers and more sales, so take it slow.

Samples
Now it is time to send out a newsletter to your subscribers. Remember, don’t come on too strong, but still promote your products and services enough that you could possibly get a bite or two. At this stage it is not as much about making a sale as it is planting the idea in the subscribers’ mind.

Promotion
Now that you have permission to email people and you have sent them some basic info on your products and services, and potentially a sample newsletter, you are ready to truly take advantage of all the autoresponder has to offer and begin promoting your product. There should be a sales letter that accompanies the promotion and you should address the reader by name. Doing all of this will help significantly in converting sales.

The Way Autoresponders Work

Autoresponders are mostly known for their ability to send out messages automatically. However, they can do much more than just that one job. In fact, marketers will find there are many other advantages they can use to their benefit if they have an autoresponder system. The following examples are just some of the things you will find autoresponders are able to do and will increase the automation of your business. Best of all, you will find you have a lot more free time than you imagined.

Welcome Subscribers
One of the benefits of this system is that it can send out “welcome” messages when new subscribers sign up. They could be signing up to your website, your newsletter, or to some other list you have. Regardless, when they sign up the system will automatically respond to them to confirm their signing up and to welcome them. This keeps new members happy, feeling welcome, and above all, frees up time for you!

Adding Customers
Frequently, you will find that you need to add new customers to your list, or at least hope this is the case. This can take up a lot of your time and it can also be a boring job. Luckily, you can hand this task over to the autoresponder so you can focus on more important things.

Alerts
It is common for companies or marketers to send out updates on what’s going on or alerts in addition to the reports, newsletters, and additional information that might need to be sent. Typing hundreds or even thousands of addresses simply does not make sense when you can set up the autoresponder to handle any mass mailing that is needed.

Product Promotion
To sell your product you need to promote it. However, this can also take up a lot of your time if you are handling everything manually. Don’t waste your time doing something that can easily be automated. You will be able to send your entire list emails on your products, promoting them and making sales all with the click of the “send” button.

Adding Affiliates
If you are a marketer then you will hopefully be adding affiliates as you grow. In order to make this time efficient then you can set up the autoresponder to help you with this task. It will be completed automatically, you will never forget anyone, and that means that you will have more affiliates making more sales for you over the long haul.

Customer Comments
In order to truly market your product you will want to have customer comments on your page. The easiest way to do this is to make it easy for customers to leave positive feedback and for you to receive it. Through the autoresponder features you will find this is an easy task and one that will benefit you.

Autoresponders still have other benefits that they can offer, these are just some of the basics that you will more than likely take advantage of immediately. It does take a little bit of time and effort to get it all set up, but once you do it is completely worth it.

Background on Autoresponders

Autoresponders were developed so that businesses or individuals could easily inform those who email them that they are unavailable for a period of time. This is perfect for when an individual is on vacation, a business trip, or simply out of the office for a period of time. The autoresponder sends an automatic reply email when an email enters the inbox. This email will inform the reader of the reason the autoresponder email is being setn. A great comparison is to consider this as voicemail for email. For example, when you call someone and they don’t pick up you can leave a message and hear a message they have left, too. So, when you email someone and they are unavailable you will essentially receive their “recording” letting you know where they are, when they will be available again, and potentially how to contact them. Attachments may even be attached to email messages sent through an auto-response system.

How do they work?
Autoresponders work well because they relay information quickly and easily. This is whether it is through an email response or for someone who sings up for information. An example of this would be for when you have an email list. The easiest way to respond to all the emails is through a system such as this. It is automatic, fast, and the emails are immediately sent to the person that requested information. This makes the amount of work you have to do much less simply because you don’t have to respond to each email that comes in, the program does it for you automatically. It is not uncommon for marketers to rely on autoresponders because it helps them respond to requests for information, subscribers to newsletters, or even welcome emails to new members.

Internet marketers also use autoresponders. They are a great way to follow up with people without spending much time doing so. People are able to make better use of their time and still respond quickly to individuals interested in additional information or materials. Then, it is helpful to use the same system to send out emails providing additional information on promotions, reports, articles, or anything that might be of interest. It is the easiest, fastest, and most affordable way to reach a large amount of people.

There are many other uses for autoresponders, however, and they should definitely be taken advantage of. For example, using this method of contact will help people share important information without a delay in getting the information out. It’s great for delivering passwords, links, and any other information that may be delivered by email. Since it is automated any request for information of any kind can easily be handled without adding any work to anyone else’s schedule.

Tips for Email Newsletters

If you are going to write a newsletter for your email newsletter marketing campaigns, you will want to make it as good as you possibly can. The way to do this is to follow some simple tips that will make your content stand out, shine even, and keep readers interested. You might not know how to get started writing an email newsletter, but the following tips will provide you with some helpful information to ensure what you are writing is well written and well received.

Headlines
The first thing you want to do is have scannable content. The easiest way to do this is through headlines. There are many things you may want to talk about in your content, however you don’t want to write and write and write and never offer a break between topics or separate new ideas for your readers. Some readers may be interested in certain information and skip other, and vice versa. Because of this it makes sense to use headlines to break up content and make the information easier to scan and read. Your subscribers will appreciate this and you are more likely to keep the readers you have. You can use a variety of colors, html code, italics, lists, and the like, and this will also help break up the content. You may want to keep track of the different methods you are using to find what works best for your readers.

Subject and Opening Lines
The subject of the email is just as important, if not more so, than the first line of the newsletter. You need the subject to call attention to your newsletter and make your readers open it. Some readers prefer the title to be the same every single week while others like to see a new title each week. You will have to see what works best for your readers or try mixing it up a bit to find the right balance. Regardless, the subject line is like the title line of your newsletter so it is important to ensure that it calls the readers’ attention.

The first line of your newsletter is also very important. In fact, the information at the top of your newsletter is more likely to get you more customers than the information you place at the bottom. Because of this you will want to take great care and format your newsletter in a way that the most important information is always at the top so it will be the first to be read.

Pay Attention
To ensure you make the most of your newsletter pay attention to what readers click on. Then, you will have research to show you what works and what doesn’t. Your first few emails may not be just like you had hoped, but it takes time and experience to create the perfect newsletter. You could also rely on a company to help you format your newsletter in a way that will bring you in more business!

Communicating Your Newsletter to New Subscribers

There are many potential subscribers out there for your newsletter, however these subscribers generally want real information or whatever you promised to get them to sign up in the first place. For example, if you promise your newsletter will be about tips on how to blog then your subscribers will anticipate to receive weekly email newsletters that have inside tips. Don’t promise one thing and then result to sending emails about affiliates or the like. This will not help you in the long run so it’s best to be up front and honest. Remember, there is no problem including information about affiliates and the like in your newsletter. Just follow through with the information you promise to begin with. This is the best way to communicate with your readers and ensure that they remain subscribes. When you trick people into subscribing you will find they quickly unsubscribe!

Consistency
Subscribers will thrive on a newsletter that is consistent. This means one that arrives on the same day every week or month, one that has the same format, and one that always provides the information they are looking for. It is really important to be consistent and you will find that when you are you will have more subscribers and in turn more customers.

Remember, it’s okay to experiment with your newsletter and try and make it better each week or month. However, don’t change what isn’t broken and keep your reader’s happy and content. You could always provide a survey, too, asking readers to respond to you and let you know what works best about your newsletter and what they would like you to improve.

Personal Style
When you are writing your newsletter keep in mind that it is best to have a simple and personal approach. The reason why is because people respond better to this than they would they hyped up “salesy” approach. You may think that is the method you should use when you write your newsletter. However, you will find that a personal approach that is easy to read is greatly appreciated by your readers and it will actually build more confidence in your newsletter.

Value
Another goal of your email newsletter is to find a way to provide value to your readers. Once your readers no longer find value in your newsletter they will unsubscribe. There are many methods of providing value in your newsletter and different readers will define “value” in a different way. So, that means you need to have a newsletter that can be valuable to many in a variety of ways. For example, use original content, provide tips, provide links to resources and tools that might be considered valuable, and the like.

Define Your Newsletter Goals

Once you have decided to begin marketing your company via an email newsletter it is important to do some research and take the time to set some goals. Writing just for the sake of writing won’t get you anywhere. However, if you establish some goals and determine a way to reach them through the content in your newsletter then you will be more likely to achieve the goals you have.

What’s Your Goal?
The first thing you must identify is exactly what you are trying to achieve with your newsletter. Do you want to increase the amount of traffic your blog receives or are you hoping to create a reading community? You could be trying to create a list to “sell” your products to or else you may want to make your brand stronger. Some people may want to generate money through their newsletter or have a mixture of these goals.

Information
You will want to evaluate what kind of information you will provide in your newsletter. Perhaps you want to explore a new theme each week that builds on the previous theme. Or, perhaps you want to share other types of information and content such as information from blogs/forums or other types of news. These will result in different types of newsletters, but that’s okay as long as the goal is begin met by the content that is provided in the newsletter.

Advertising
If you have many readers then others may wish to advertize in your newsletter. Of course, this is a great way to raise money for your company, however it might not be in your best interest. It is important to evaluate whether this makes the most sense for your company and services or not. It will take some serious consideration and a long term plan to determine exactly what you need to do in regards to advertising. Many times, however, advertising your own services and products is the best.

New Readers
If one of your goals is to gain new readers then you need to establish a plan how you will go about accomplishing that. Having new readers means that you can create a community of readers interested in the topics who may then discuss them further on other blogs, in your forums, and the like. This could in turn gain even more readers. Having new readers also means potential new customers. You should always keep this in mind when it comes to your newsletters. Look at it from the point of view of a new reader and see if it is appealing. This is an important exercise to ensure you aren’t turning potential new customers away.

Writing Email Newsletters

If you don’t know this already you need to know that email newsletters aren’t just about providing information to your customers about what’s happening in the company. It’s also a way to market your company and the primary reason you will be sending out the emails in the first place. A newsletter can help you reach a bigger audience while it can also help you establish your authority as well as your brand. You can up sell your product or service and grow your business as long as you know how to write the newsletter.

Remember, if you have been advertising on the radio, in print, or even thinking of TV ads, then you are spending too much money on advertising without tapping into the easiest and most affordable method of all, which is through email newsletters. It might be surprising, but sending your subscribers an email newsletter on a monthly basis is a wonderful way to advertise and it is more effective in many cases than the other methods mentioned above. Not to mention, it is practically free.

The email newsletter is basically a method of sending a traditional newsletter. It has all of the same information except it may include links to your website or to other relevant information. There are many things you may include in a newsletter, including company events, prices of shares, promotions, awards, new products, how to articles, research and the like.

Tips for Writing

When it comes to actually writing your email newsletter there are several tips you need to follow to ensure success. There is nothing more difficult than trying to write something and having no idea how to get started. These tips will provide you a roadmap that will help you along the way.

Personal
First, always address each newsletter with the reader’s name. When you are personal you are more likely to create a connection with the reader and they are more likely to read it and act on your sales call.

News
Make each newsletter up to date and with news. Don’t include old information that was in past newsletters that your readers have already read. Always provide something new and worthwhile to keep them interested and reading.

Research
Another tip is to research what your readers want to know. Do surveys, talk in chat rooms and simply find out what your readers are dying to know. When you know what your readers are interested in then you are better able to write a newsletter that has the information they need.

Headlines and Scanning
Finally, write your content in a way that it can easily be scanned by reading the headlines. Nobody likes big blocks of text and by breaking your newsletter up into small blocks of text with easy to scan headlines you will make it easier on the reader to find what they want to read first and to keep their interest. This is definitely the method you will want to use when writing your email text.

Email Newsletters in the Bad Economy

The economy has crashed and each day it continues to smolder. Because of this it makes more sense than ever to take care of your business and save money wherever you can. There are many ways you can communicate with your readers about the problems with the economy through your email newsletter that will bring them together. There are also methods to help them better deal with the downturn by providing deals, discounts, and special offers. The point of the newsletter is to share information with your subscribers, but also to thank them for being a customer and make shopping during this economic downturn a little easier. The following suggestions will help you write a newsletter that is informational and helpful while calling your customers to action and making a sale.

Tone
The tone of the email should not be to scare people, the economy has done that enough on its own. Instead, your newsletter should address the current situation and show ways that your company can help through the hard times. You will want the text to be compassionate, understanding, and to create a bond between the reader and your company. People are looking for a company that will understand what they are going through and you want to set yourself up as that company. Remember, if you make things sound really bad in your newsletter people will be less inclined to buy because they will get your unintended message that buying now is not a wise idea. You want to set up a different message that is that buying now from your company at a discount is the wisest move they could make.

Offers
Remember to make offers to your customers and subscribers. Let them know that you are feeling the pinch of the economy, too, and are there to offer some great deals that have never been offered before. Let people know how you are thanking them for their patronage and give them a discount if they order by a particular date or offer them a free gift. There are many ways to draw people in and when the economy is bad a discount is the best way to go about it.

Savings
Beyond simply saving money for your customers, you will be saving money for your business by using an autoresponder to send the email newsletter. It is incredible to calculate your costs for a year’s worth of newsletters and then compare them with the cost of sending a newsletter through email. You will be amazed at the savings and will be able to use this money in the business or to give customers a bigger discount so they keep shopping.

Using Email Newsletters

Newsletters have been popular for decades and typically included information like news about the company, current events, and even things that would soon be happening. Today, newsletters are not mailed through snail mail as often as they are sent through email. This has several benefits including saving a lot of time, money, and the environment. Email newsletters are a great way to share information with customers and potential customers. The following are a few of the benefits you will find with email newsletters.

Information

You can really position your company as the best in the industry by keeping your subscribers well informed.

Share the Knowledge
Readers of your newsletter will anxiously await the next edition when you provide interesting information. For example, how to articles are wonderful options for your newsletter because they help people do things on their own. Since you are providing them with this information they become hooked on the information you send. You can fill the newsletter with all types of information as long as it relates to your industry in some way.

Gain Brand Awareness
If you are truly interested in promoting your brand then take advantage of the email newsletter. Once you have people subscribing to your newsletter because they are truly interested in reading it then you will find it is much easier to promote your products and services and create brand awareness. This should be approached slowly and surely, but it’s a great way to gain customers so take advantage of it.

Save Money

Because of this you will be able to save a great deal of money on postage, paper, ink, and the time it takes to stuff all those envelopes and take them to the post office. An email newsletter can be typed on a computer and then set up with an autoresponder to go to everyone on your contact list. The answer is through email marketing.

Email marketing has evolved considerably since it first became popular. At first, spamming was quite common and people received emails from all kinds of companies and products without their express permission. This was annoying and in many cases dangerous because the emails were frequently viruses or scams. This led people to fear opening mail from anyone they didn’t know and put a halt on the effectiveness of email marketing.

However, with the invention of spam blockers as well as opt in listservs email marketing is once again popular and a wonderful option for those who are on a tight budget or even timeframe and want to share with the world information about their product or service.

It’s amazing, but with an hour’s worth of work you can write a good email that markets your product or service, email it to hundreds or even thousands of people, and potentially even have some orders waiting for you in your inbox. That is amazing and turnaround that you would never seen with other types of direct marketing. Since email marketing is so effective and fast you should respect it and learn the ways that it can be effectively carried out. For example, you don’t want to use methods that will give your product or service a bad name. This means that you don’t want to spam people or do anything else that is potentially illegal.

Take your time and develop an email marketing campaign that is strong and will be productive. Keep in mind, too, that it is very likely you will need to change your marketing plan a few times or simply improve it to make more money. This is normal and should be expected. Nothing ever turns out perfect the first time so taking your time and being confident really is important.
Remember that the first thing you want to do is create an email list of opt in email addresses you can target. This means the individuals will be interested in your product not to mention they will have you on their contact list so that your emails will be delivered to their inbox. This is important because your emails will reach them and with them your message. This will increase your sales.

Email marketing is a wonderful way to improve your business and get more sales. However, it will take time and effort to do so and that requires hard work and dedication. Put forth the effort and you will be repaid.

Add the person’s name in the email as well as throughout the email and what you will have is an immediate connection with the reader. This is important if you are interested in selling your product or service. The best way to get a person’s name to personalize the email with is through opt in emails. Talk
This might sound confusing that you should “talk” in an email, but that is truly what you should do. Approach the writing of the email as if you were talking to your best friend about this product or service. Doing so will help you write in a way that is easy to read and that is compelling. Use first person and steer away from writing in a way that is dry or not very interesting. Make people want to read the email by using great words, providing testimonials, and examples to prove your product or service is what you claim it to be.

Paragraphs and Subheads
You will also need to use short paragraphs and subheads throughout the email. Breaking the email up into short blocks of text will make it much easier to read and it will also help you sell more products. So, even if you don’t like writing much it really is worth your while to format the email in a way that will be easy to read and will help you make more sales.

These are just a few tips to help you write a marketing email. It does take some time and effort to get the email just right, however it won’t be too long before you become a pro. Not to mention, after the first email if you don’t get a great response then you will be able to revise your email and try again.

Email Marketing FAQ

Email marketing is becoming more popular every single day simply because it is a great way to reach people quickly and affordably. More than ever email marketing is becoming the preferred method for individuals interested in advertising their products and services. However, there are several ways you can go about email marketing and some of them are good while others aren’t. Even if a particular method appears to be a good way, it might not be in the long run. As a result, you should know the basics of email marketing and how it applies to you and your business. The following information are the answers to some popular questions regarding email marketing.

What is the difference between Opt In emails and Spam?
There is a big difference between opt in emails and spam. First of all, spam is unsolicited commercial emails that simply arrive in your inbox without permission. This is annoying, clogs your inbox, and in some cases can even infect your computer with a virus. As a result, few people will open unsolicited emails. Most of the time these will be directed directly to the trash and never will be seen. In some cases, people will be able to cause problems for you and it is possible to even lose your ISP service. Don’t spam, instead use opt in email addresses. These are email addresses that you collect on your website or in other ways where the individual voluntarily gives you his/her email address.

How do you collect opt in email addresses?
One question that is very popular is how to collect opt in email addresses. The easiest way is to make it easy for people to give you their email addresses and to also make it worth their while. You should always offer something for free, like an ebook or a newsletter, to inspire people to hand over their email. Another option is to simply hold a contest where people will need to register with a valid email address in order to win. Pop up boxes on your website will also prove helpful in collecting email addresses. Remember, though, that if you don’t offer something for free then you won’t get as many email addresses as you would otherwise. Take the time and effort to create an ebook, newsletter, or some other type of information that will prove to motivate individuals to subscribe to your site.

How do you write a marketing email?
Others are interested in how to write a marketing email. In general, writing a marketing email is really easy because all you have to do is write clearly and to the reader. This means that you must address the person by name, write as if you are speaking to them, break the email up into many short paragraphs with subheadings, and write passionately about your product or service.

Getting Started with Opt-In Email Marketing

If you have decided to promote your products and services through opt-in email marketing then you will need to know how to get started. It’s important to understand that by taking the opt-in email address route you are making the best decision for your product or service. Part of the reason is that when you use opt in email addresses the recipients will be knowledgeable of your product’s name when the email arrives. This means that they are considerably more likely to open the email, read it, and then make a purchase. Similarly, when you use opt in email addresses in most cases your email will arrive in their email inbox. Spam emails rarely make it through spam filters and as a result they don’t really make a big difference in your bottom line. So, getting started by using opt-in email marketing is an important way to set your campaign off to a good start.

Getting the Email Addresses
Once you are ready to get started with your opt-in addresses you need to figure out how to get the addresses. There are many methods you may use to collect email addresses. For example, you might want to set up a subscription box on your website so that visitors may voluntarily sign up for a free newsletter or periodic updates from your website. Many people will feel comfortable providing their email address when they are on your website because they have a vested interest. This means that they are interested in what you are providing whether it is information, a service, a product, or a combination of all of these.

Another method of collecting email addresses that is popular and seems to be a great way to go about it is to have popup windows on your site. For example, when someone visits your site a pop up window could be displayed that would request their email address if they want a free ebook, or a free newsletter, or perhaps even coupons for products or services. The way you word the ad is up to you, but it should be compelling enough that visitors will want to sign up and provide you with an email address that is valid.

Some email marketers have found that sponsoring a contest is an excellent way to collect valid email addresses because everyone wants to win something. Providing their email address for the chance of winning a prize is a small price to pay and one many people will more than happily do.

Of course, there are many ways to collect email addresses and to get started in opt in email marketing. However, the methods discussed here should help you significantly and allow you to get a great start to email marketing.

Marketing your services can be easily done through email. However, you must understand what email marketing is all about and how to make it work for you. The most obvious question many marketers have is how they will possibly find the thousands of email addresses they need to effectively market their product. There are several ways to get lists of email addresses. One is to buy them and the other is to build them. The first option is one you will always want to avoid. Never buy any email addresses to use in your email marketing efforts simply because this is considered spam. People don’t like to receive spam and besides receiving complaints you could also lose your ISP and even be fined. The option of building an email list is the best option for you.

Building a List
Building an email list really is easier than you might think. All that is necessary is for you to find ways to collect email addresses with the permission of the owner. There are several ways you might want to go about doing this. First of all, you can have a newsletter subscription box where those interested in your newsletter on a specific topic can register with their email address. You are doing two things here. First, you are receiving the email addresses you so desperately need for your email marketing campaign. The second is that you are collecting email addresses from individuals who have an active interest in your product or service. How to Write Marketing Emails

Email marketing is truly the best way to market your product without spending much money while receiving an excellent response rate. The problem is that you might not be a great writer or perhaps you don’t know how to start writing a marketing email. Fortunately, it is not as difficult as you might imagine. The following tips will help you write a marketing email that is efficient and helps make sales.

Personal
It’s really important to write emails that are personalized. This is especially the case if you have the name of the person that you are emailing. Addressing the email to the recipient with their name will make them more likely to open the email, read it and respond.

Communicate
You need to communicate when you write on a personal level, not write like you are writing a report. Be personal, write like you talk, and make your email easy to read. This will improve your chances of having people read your email, which is really important if you are trying to make a sale.

Be Direct
You should write directly to the person who is reading the email. Don’t write the email as if it is directed to a large group of people. Instead, write it as if it is directed to the person reading the email. This will bring the reader in, make them feel as if you are writing specifically to them, and help them feel comfortable buying your product or service.

Paragraphs
Do you like to read one huge block of text or do you prefer lots of smaller paragraphs that are easy to read? Most people prefer lots of short paragraphs because they are easy to skim and read. So, when you are writing your emails make sure you break up the text with as many short and easy to read paragraphs as possible. It’s okay to even use one sentence to emphasize your point!

Subheads
You will also want to include subheadings in your email. Subheadings help break up the email and provide information at a glance so people can read what interests them. This is very helpful and will catch the attention of the reader. Make sure you make headlines short, sweet, and informative.

Passion
You will want to make your email passionate about the product or service you are marketing. The reason why is that when you sell the product with your words people are more likely to want to buy it immediately. Be passionate about your product and you will more than likely sell more!

Ways to Collect Opt In Email Addresses

When you want to use email marketing to your advantage you will need to have plenty of email addresses of potential customers. However, this is not something that you can take care of by buying lists of harvested email addresses or just spamming people. Instead, you will need to ensure the email addresses you use to market your product are addresses that are legally yours to use. The following methods are great ways to collect opt in email addresses so you can build an email list that is strong and above all targeted to those interested in your product and/or services.

Subscriber Boxes

On your website it is a good idea to include a subscriber box where those visiting your site may sign up for deals, discounts, newsletters, and the like that your website might send out. Make signing up on the website seem to be something that will be worth their while and you will have lots of visitors provide you with their email addresses.

Pop Up Boxes

Many people have websites, but they lose the opportunity to ask visitors for their email addresses simply because they don’t take advantage of everything available to them. For example, you could add a pop up box to your website so that as soon as someone visits your site they will be offered a free newsletter or ebook, or something else worthwhile, simply for signing up. People can close the pop up box easily, but they can also add their email address and you will receive lots of contact information this way. You could also add the pop up box to appear when someone tries to leave your site. Either method might work for you so give them a try.

Contests

People love contests and the opportunity to win anything is enough to get many people to sign up with their email address. If you sponsor a contest then you have a better chance of getting lots of email addresses that are legally yours to use. Not to mention, you are more likely to receive valid email addresses because in order to win the individual must provide a current and valid email address so they may be contacted should they win the contest. This is a wonderful method to receive email addresses and it is quite popular.

Freebies

Another way to receive email addresses is to offer freebies simply for signing up. Provide free newsletters, eBooks, discounts, or anything else you can think of that will make people want to sign up and receive them. It’s worth your while to offer freebies to those who sign up because it means you will receive a valid email address that belongs to someone interested in your products!

Give these methods a try and you will likely find that they work quite well for you. There are many other methods you may want to use so create a plan that works for you and try various methods until you find the one that works best for you.

The Basics of Opt-In Email Marketing

Junk mail is hated by most everyone that receives it. Similarly, spam, which is email junk mail, is usually just as hated and frequently bypasses people’s inboxes and is sent straight to the trash. This does not help your email marketing campaign so you will need to do something to ensure your marketing email safely arrives in the inbox.

Remember, spamming people might be fast and easy, however do you really want to equate your product with spam or junk mail? That’s not a great way to create a name for your product or service. Not to mention, spamming is illegal and more and more people are finding themselves in legal trouble because of it. That’s certainly not any fun and not worth your time and energy. Besides the fact that if you send spam emails you are much less likely to sell your product or service because most people will delete the email before they ever read it. That’s why opt in email marketing is the most effective. That’s because the emails are targeted to people who have willingly provided their email addresses to you.

When people provide their email address to you it’s because they are interested in your product, service, or basically what you have to say. These are the people you want to target through email marketing because they are the ones most likely to buy your product. You may be excited about email marketing and tempted to buy software that harvests email addresses or provides you with other huge lists of addresses you cannot use legally. Don’t go this route even if it is tempting. It won’t work out for you in the end not to mention most people have spam blockers and will never even see your email. Put a little bit of time and effort into your email marketing and it will pay big dividends.

Be creative about opt in email marketing and you will find there are a lot of people willing to give you their email address. Especially if you make it worth their while by providing them with something for their time and effort. Most people interested in reading a newsletter or free eBook on a specific topic will sign up with their email address. This is a great way for you to get those email addresses you need without doing anything illegal. Not to mention, when you use this method you are more likely to have a higher percentage of sales from your email marketing because your emails will make it through the spam filters not to mention people will recognize your email and are more likely to open it and trust you.

Keep in mind there is legislation in the United States regarding spamming and that is certainly not something you will want to play around with. If you are serious about Internet marketing then be serious about email marketing and do it the right way.

Most marketers know to expect an incredibly low response rate with direct mail. However, when using email marketing the response rate can be substantially higher. Having such a great response rate with so little time and money invested in marketing results in a better payoff.

Email marketing is revolutionizing the marketing industry and businesses are realizing its true power. Without investing much money and effort, any business can easily and effectively run a profitable email marketing campaign.

Google Adwords and Small Business Marketing

There are many benefits to Google Adwords, especially when it comes to small business marketing. Companies will do best when they combine Google adwords and email marketing as well as other methods of advertisement. There are many benefits of Google Adwords.
First of all, with AdWords you will be able to target your ads to those people who are actually trying to find services or products similar to yours. This makes the entire advertising process easier because your ad will only be seen by people actively looking for what you are selling or providing. Because of this you won’t waste your time showing your ad to those who aren’t really interested in your product or service or those who simply aren’t very likely to buy anything you are selling. The combination of this means that you will receive a return on your marketing investment like you can’t obtain from any other marketing means.

The number of people you will reach is many more than you can probably imagine. The vast majority of United States Internet users see adwords every month and there are many more across the world that do, too. This means the potential reach for your products and services is much more than you could ever hope for without Adwords. Similarly, when you use Adwords you will have a better chance of having individuals subscribe to your email marketing list and will be able to build an amazing marketing campaign based on this opt in list.

Since small businesses are usually on a budget it is really important for marketing to be cost effective. Adwords is actually very cost effective because you have control over your marketing. You may choose to pay for CPM or CPC, which is the difference in impressions or clicks. You choose how much you are willing to pay for each click or ad view, so you are in total control of how much your small business pays for marketing. Since you will be using email marketing in conjunction with this, and that is relatively affordable, you will be able to spend a little more on your most popular adwords. If you are on a strict budget then you can set a daily limit so that when your Adwords’ account reaches that limit in a day’s time it won’t exceed it. Depending on how your budget is and how much business you get you can always edit your Adwords spending limit. The best thing about Google Adwords is that people are presented with your ad at exactly the same time they are looking for information on your product or service.

With your control over Adwords, how much you spend, and the keywords you use then you will not exceed your marketing budget and will be able to grow slowly and on your own schedule. Small businesses should definitely take advantage of this marketing option.

Small Business Marketing Idea

If you are looking for a small business marketing idea then you definitely need to consider using car magnets for yourself, your employees, and anyone else that would be willing to advertise for you. This particular method works wonderfully especially when used in conjunction with email marketing and other types of marketing. For example, all you need for this type of marketing is to simply have some magnets made with your company’s logo and web address. You don’t want to have too much information on the magnet because people driving down the road can’t remember that much information. You may choose to add a phone number, but one of the best options is to have a short and easy to remember web address that people can see and remember. Doing this will ensure that more people will be able to remember your company and locate you on the web.

When you consider how many people you pass on the road each day and multiply that by the amount of people that pass your employees and content clients then you will realize how many people you an basically advertise to without spending any extra money. Begin using this method of advertising and in no time you will see the number of sales increase.

If you don’t see your sales increase with this method of advertising then you are doing something wrong. It could be because the magnet is difficult to see or the web address is too hard to remember. Another problem could be that it is not in an easy to see place on the vehicle. Consider these potential problems and work to correct them.

This is a very affordable method to market your small business. Similarly, if you are marketing you business through email marketing you will find that using the magnets to market your business is a great complement and since both of these are effective ways to advertise your business and they are both very affordable. Small businesses with low budgets will find these methods to work very well despite not costing much at all.

When you begin using these methods don’t be surprised if your business truly takes off more than you had imagined. It has been proven that email marketing works better than many other forms of marketing that are more expensive and stressful to use. So, using these two methods may be quite affordable and easy to use, but they are both likely to help you make the sales you need.

Email Evolution - Frequency of Mails

Years ago, email was use sporadically and only when necessary. However, as it began to evolve things changed and with the email evolution the number of emails individuals received skyrocketed. In fact, it has been proven that people lose interest in emails sent to them based solely on the frequency they receive them. Amazingly, the problem is that one company may be the culprit of sending multiple emails to an individual. For example, an airline might send discounted ticket emails from the marketing division, bookings from the customer service division, another email based on frequent flyer miles from the loyalty department, and so on and so forth. While the actual divisions may not be going overboard and sending too many emails the actual company is and the people receiving the emails are associating the idea of “spam” with the particular company.

This works against the company and is the last thing they want to do. However, having multiple divisions within a company can make the entire process to confusing to keep track. In fact, the number of times an individual is contacted by the same company could be a couple times per day, which is conserved too much by most email users and the company may be unaware of the image they are providing of their company.

When a customer receives so many emails they get burned out. The problem with this is that when there are truly important emails the individual is likely to simply delete them rather than open and read them. Why? Because so many previous emails were nothing but touches points without any basis. So, important emails may easily be lost in the mix of so many other emails.
Because of this it is really important for companies and even email marketers to evaluate how often they should contact their customers and how often is considered too often. Coming up with a good number and a good plan is important because it means the customers receive fewer emails and the companies are able to keep their customers interested in their products and/or services.

As an email marketer it is vitally important to understand how email has evolved and what the recipients are expecting from their email inbox. If you send too many emails you will turn people away, if you send unsolicited emails you will annoy people, and if you don’t send enough emails you will not capitalize on the unique opportunities presented through email marketing. As a result, it is important to study how email has evolved over the years to better understand how we arrived where we currently are. It’s also important to evaluate where email will be in the future and what changes should be expected.

Email Evolution - The Standards

SMTP was email’s first standard that was really important. The reason why it was so important is because it was the protocol for sending messages. In fact, it was short for simple message transfer protocol, or SMTP. This standard was incredibly easy and today it is still used. The one problem with SMTP is that when it was developed there was no thought put into how the person sending the message would be confirmed as that actual person or entity. As a result, email forgery was quite simple to accomplish and still occurs today. The flaws that occurred in the initial SMTP would be taken advantage of, too, and fall victim to worms, viruses, and spammers. Today, there are still problems with viruses, worms, spammers, and identity thieves. There are new programs to help individuals fight these problems, but they still exist. Unfortunately, this works against email marketing because people are so wary about what shows up in their email inbox and if it is really from the person claiming to send it.

Email continued to evolve and develop and as it did there were some features that were added that were really interesting. Eudora was a commercial system that was one of the first really good ones and then later Pegasus showed up and it was good, too. Soon, Internet standards were necessary for email and as they matured POP servers became practically standard, too. POP stands for Post Office Protocol. The reason this was important was because it allowed all email programs to work with one another. Without a standard there would be lots of programs but people could not communicate across these programs. That’ why POP became popular and standard.

During this time email users had to use dial up to connect to the Internet and since they were using a phone line there were per minute charges. Generally, people on the Internet during this time frame were only on so they could send emails. Then, email got a boost like never before with interfaces from providers Hotmail, Yahoo, and others. This was amazing because it allowed pretty much anyone who had access to the Internet the ability to have an email address without having to own a computer or even have an Internet connection. When this became available everyone everywhere wanted email and they got it. There are more than 600 million people with email today and the numbers are growing by the minute.

Thanks to the standards of email and the mass availability of email thanks to Hotmail and Yahoo, today email marketing is a great way to sell a product or service because hundreds, thousands, or even millions of individuals may be contacted in a matter of minutes. That’s amazing power and it is all thanks to email and its evolution.

Email Evolution - Using the Technology

Email has been around for many decades, but only used as the way we know it since 1972. Of course, many changes have occurred, but it was during the early ‘70s that Ray Tomlinson, a contractor for ARPANET, chose to use the @ sign for email to denote the user was @ a particular computer. This method turned out to be a good one and it is the method we all use today. Everyone’s email address starts with their name @ the name of their computer. Pretty amazing that an idea from that long ago is still used today in a world where last month’s technology is passé.

In the 1970s, it was much faster to pick up the phone and call someone than it was to try and contact them via email simply because very few people had it and those who did were mostly individuals working for technology companies. Today, there are more than 600 million people around the world who have an email address and because of this email marketing has exploded. It’s the perfect way to contact hundreds of thousands of people with the click of a mouse.

Email became popular with the military first, simply because it was encouraged by ARPANET. Then, Larry Roberts decided to help his boss sort his email and created email folders. This was huge and by 1975 there was even software developed that would organize email. Then, in 1976 there were even commercial packages available. ARPANET really benefitted from this because by ’76 more than 75% of their traffic was due to email.

Email was the key to changing Arpanet to Internet simply because email was not something that appealed just to the military or big businesses, it appealed to everyone pretty much everywhere. The actual developments in email and how it evolved are difficult to pinpoint simply because the advanced were so fast and happened so quickly that each new one obscured the previous one. As a result, most people assume email is this magic and recent development that is based on the Internet when it is actually older and has been around for longer.

One of the biggest advances in the early days was to allow individuals to compose an email without being connected to the Internet. There is an option on Microsoft Outlook for this and the early method was similar. This simply allowed people to avoid high telephone charges by composing their mails offline and then connecting just to send them. This was more cost effective and easier for people to use.

In the beginning there weren’t many standards so being connected to the Internet and composing emails could occasionally be a pain. Offline readers allowed for individuals to avoid this hassle and the high per minute charges. The changes in email and the Internet have certainly benefitted email marketers who now have the ability to send out as many emails to as many people as they want in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost.

Evolution of Email—The Beginning of Email Marketing

Email may be a daily part of your life, but it hasn’t always been around. Although, it has actually been around longer than the Internet has and even longer than ARPANet. Its evolution was simple and based on the changes in technology. The early uses of email were basically like leaving a note on someone’s desk, except that note was left in a directory so email marketing wasn’t actually an option. A user simply left a note in another user’s directory so that when they logged in they would see it. It wasn’t like the inboxes we have today specifically for sending and receiving email, however it accomplished its goal.

The first true email system was called MAILBOX and it was used at MIT as early as 1965. That is a very long time ago compared to when people think email was introduced. This program worked well and another program that sent emails was called SNDMSG, basically meaning “send message”.

The mainframe computers that used these types of programs had as many as 100 users on them. Many time people used a “dumb terminal” to connect to the mainframe. The dumb terminals did not have any memory or actual storage; they simply allowed people to connect to the mainframe. As a result, work was actually conducted on the remote mainframe.

This was before internetworking so email was only possible for people that used the same computer. As a result, there was no need for an actual email address or sending an email. It was more like placing an email on a mainframe so that others could see it, which meant that if email marketing was used at all it certainly didn’t reach many people. Then, when computers began to be able to communicate to other computers via networks email became much more complicated and the idea of email marketing would eventually evolve from this. However, now that computers could take sending an email meant that people would need addresses to send the emails across networks and have them arrive to the correct person.

Today, email marketing is based on having thousands of email addresses to send information quickly and affordably. However, in the early days of email the issue of addressing emails and sending them across networks was in the early stages so email marketing would still be a long way out as a way to contact lots of people in just a few strokes of the keyboard. Then, in 1972 Ray Tomlinson played a huge role in creating the way email is sent and received and is the one who chose the @ sign to denote a particular destination for an email. This alone opened up email so that it could be sent and received across networks and is the root of email marketing.

Email Evolution and Relevance of Email

Today when people open their email inbox they want to see emails from co-workers, friends, family members, and maybe their favorite stores. However, what they don’t want to see is a bunch of spam filling up their inbox and wasting their day even if they would approach or enjoy the product or service you are marketing in these emails. As a result, for email marketers it is incredibly important to understand that the evolution of email had made it more important than ever to send relevant emails. If you manage to send emails that are truly relevant you have a much better chance of having them opened and read.

So, what this comes down to is knowing how often to send emails and what information to include in them to make them relevant. Individuals ignore emails all too frequently simply because the first five or 10 they received offered no benefit to them. So, they no longer take the time to read them or even open them for that matter. They are immediately deleted and never supply the message to the potential customers. This is not just a problem with unknown companies; it’s a problem for companies that have lifelong customers that love their products. The problem is that if the email is not relevant or worthwhile it won’t be read.

What is important is for companies that have customers on their opt in list to research what these customers have purchased in the past. Then, create emails based on their personal preferences and purchases. For example, one particular online shoe company will follow up with you one year after a purchase of a pair of shoes to provide the link and information on those shoes should you want to buy a replacement pair. That is a pretty good marketing trick because it plays on the purchase, the product, and even the size. Providing a link to the actual shoe with the actual size showing its availability is strong and a proper way to go about email marketing.
The email marketer will want to study the evolution of email to see where mistakes were made and how to overcome them and make their approach even better. It certainly is not easy to be involved in email marketing in an age when people want to do nothing more than hit the delete button if they aren’t interested. However, finding ways to make the email relative whether it is free shipping, discounts, or their favorite items, will help with the entire plan to build business.

Using Email for Marketing Purposes

Once email evolved to the point that it could be used for email marketing there were many companies and individuals that truly abused this new method of conducting business. As a result, it really burned some email users and created doubt across huge segments of people who simply did not want to receive email from anyone they did not know or even have to waste their time with these kinds of emails. This resulted in spam blockers. In the early days nobody considered spam blockers because email was only sent by those who actually needed to contact you.

However, things began to change and email addresses were collected and sold in huge lists, without the permission of the email address owner, and then used. This was a rogue way of conducting business and one that really backfired overall because now Internet and Email marketers must truly jump through hoops in order to have permission to contact those who are potentially interested in their products and services.

Because of the way email marketing got its start people today must be creative when it comes to email marketing and how they will contact individuals. The first and most important thing is obtaining permission. There are quite a few ways to go about this and those interested in email marketing will need to learn what they are to ensure they are abiding by them.

First of all, if you plan on using email marketing make sure you have email addresses that are expecting to receive emails from you. Otherwise, you could be fined or receive flack from your ISP not to mention damage the name of your product or service. Similarly, if individuals aren’t expecting to receive your emails they probably won’t because of spam blockers. When they are expecting your email then they will have your email address on their “safe” list and this will allow the email to go through. There are so many things to learn and keep in mind when it comes to using email for email marketing purposes.

There may be some obstacles to marketing your product or service via email, but they really are not difficult to overcome if you are willing to work somewhat and be creative about getting permission to use email addresses. Once you get good at this then you will find you can really drive your business through email marketing. The biggest problem is not getting into someone’s inbox. Instead, the challenge is finding a way to make them open and read your email. Most people simply click the delete button without ever seeing what you have to offer. This means that you must be creative in the subject line and in the first paragraph of the email because that might be all the person reads.
